Neurology – Center for Cognitive Impairment and Dementia

The neurology clinic is addressed to patients sent by the general practitioner or other specialists to diagnose symptoms related to diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system such as suspected stroke / TIA (transient ischemic attacks), headache and facial pain, seizures, tremor and movement disorders (eg Parkinson’s disease), mood disorders, symptoms related to peripheral nerve / neuropathy lesions.

The specialist decides whether to prescribe any diagnostic tests or review the patient or refer it to specialized reference centers and he prescribes specific therapy and subsequent controls.

The Center for Cognitive Impairment and Dementia deals with the framing and follow-up of cognitive disorders. The clinic welcomes people sent by primary care physicians (general practitioners) with doubt of cognitive impairment.

The first visit consists of a general neurological examination, a general medical history and a cognitive-behavioral anamnesis, the administration of the Minimental State Examination (MMSE) test, the compilation of the autonomy scales, as well as the request for further investigations for possible diagnostic investigations (TAC, MRI, ECG, Eco TSA, ECG Holter, evaluation of thyroid hormones, etc.)

The control visits are instead aimed at viewing the examinations carried out and at a better diagnostic classification, at evaluating the possible progression of cognitive-behavioral deficits by repeating the MMSE test and compiling anamnesis with the caregiver, to check for the presence of disorders new-onset cognitive and / or behavioral disorders (NPI scale).
During the follow-up visits, drug therapy with the most current drugs for the treatment of dementia (AChe-I and Memantine) with the preparation of the relative therapeutic plans and symptomatic therapy for behavioral disorders (antidepressants, anxiolytics, neuroleptics, mood stabilizers).
